Go Organic with Bags of Change

11 September 2008

The Soil Association’s organic fortnight runs from 6-21 September and there are some great food festivals to celebrate it. On 20-21 September, Europe’s largest celebration of organic food and drink closes on a high with an Organic Food Festival in Glasgow.

The market for organic products is rapidly growing with retail sales already over £2bn and an increasing amount of shoppers buying organic foods. And it’s not just in the UK, the sale of organic food in Ireland has increased by 82% in the last two years and more growth is definitely expected, all over Europe.

So why are we all going organic?

It goes without saying, that many of us choose organic products for our health and our children’s health. Many are also aware of the longterm effect of pesticide and insecticide use on the environment. A growing number of scientific studies report the negative effects on our health if we produce our foods with ‘agriculture-as-usual’. Furthermore, the global application of intensive farming is no longer seen as a sustainable solution for feeding ourselves whilst protecting our children’s future.

Cotton is one of the worst offenders. Did you know for instance that the production of non-organic cotton uses up to 25% of the world’s insecticides and more than 10% of the pesticides? These products all potentially end up in the soil, the air we breathe and our water and food supply. Furthermore many of these substances are being associated with numerous health issues from asthma to cancer. Read more…

Bags of Change chose to use organic cotton and hemp in its bags because of all these concerns. And because by supporting organic cotton production, we are supporting the change towards organic agriculture and a healthier future for everyone. The Bags of Change website is also an excellent source for finding out where to buy organic products – as most of our member shops sell organic food and goods, or are exclusively organic.
